When Dictator meets Democrat
-Vatsala Mishra
The recent meeting in Singapore has made the entire world awestruck.
The reactions coming out straight from the White House are not normal. In
his term, nobody has seen Trump falling head over heels for any leader. The
kind of remarks Trump made post-meeting is not the world saw coming up. So what
shall we assume? Did Trump really got hoodwinked or is he just being
pretentious?
If we talk
about the deal, one could easily see that Trump did not make any extraordinary
attempts to de- nuclearize North Korea. Instead, North Korea made the best use
of the opportunity and not only convinced U.S to provide securitization, but
also made him stop the military exercises with South Korea. Choson Simbo, North
Korea’s propaganda voice, as published in Tokyo has said that one of the
essential condition of denuclearization is termination of American strategic
commitments which includes provision of nuclear umbrella to Republic of Korea,
and probably Japan. This historic- much awaited meeting was more on the sides
of North Korea rather than US. Much more was expected from this event but it
seems U.S couldn’t make it possible.
Few months
back when both the countries were threatening each other and making derogatory
remarks, nobody on the globe ever hoped of them coming together so soon. Here,
the credit doesn’t go to the White House but it goes to the sawn- off fellow
who went beyond his capacity to make the deal possible. One should keep in mind
that he is the same fellow who had the guts to challenge world’s superpower few
months back. Undermining its capacity will be foolishness right now. The deal
has made things more complicated and here we stand predicting the worst end of
this alliance.
Amidst
failure and success, it is China who will suffer if the deal becomes
successful. This alliance is posing a major threat to China in near future. The
recent friendly move and the reconciliation between the West and the East have
somewhere made China insecure. China being the only ally of the authoritarian
Korea was confident about the fact that North Korea will depend on it, no
matter what the circumstances are. It was firmed that North Korea will never
let U.S step into their area. The continuous open threats left China
anticipating that both U.S and North Korea will never come together. But to its
dismay, North Korea itself stepped forward to reconcile. Now it is completely
unavoidable to prevent U.S intervening into East Asian matters. In this crucial
time when China is emerging with a greater pace, U.S intervention will make its
pace slower. It can be perceived as a betrayal from Kim’s side as well. But
China has no other option rather being quite as any negative reaction on this
event may expose its insecurity to the world. Moreover, it is obvious that
China has lost its place in Kim’s ally’s list as now it is becoming closer the
U.S. As far as South Korea is concerned, Kim has already reciprocated by
sending its athletes to Winter Olympics in South Korea in February. This is
certain that Kim is now embracing every country and is no longer restricting
itself within its own territory.
Where China
is left with a dilemma, U.S is still living in an illusion that it made North
Korea de-nuclearize. Yes, Kim agreed to de- nuclearize and has already started
working on it, but Kim, on the other hand was not asked to stop the production
of uranium and plutonium. Trump should not forget that North Korea has already
produced nuclear weapons. Just because it has promised to give up all the
weapons doesn’t mean that it is incapable of producing it again. Where Trump is
patting his own back thinking that he has not removed sanctions till now, he
should remember, North Korea never cared about sanctions- neither it did in
past nor it will do it in future.
Kim has
conspicuously extended hands for reconciliation and Trump’s naïve ignorance has
given an opportunity to North Korea to create its positive image in the global
politics. This is indeed a credulous move by Trump which may give devastating
results in future. Fingers crossed… but it is evident that there is one new
power emerging- which can threaten U.S, can make China insecure, reconcile,
negotiate and brain wash highly experienced democrats. One cannot deny that Kim
has better negotiation skills and more appropriate strategies. As far as North
Korea keeps embracing changes, one cannot stop it emerging as a great power.
After all, one should remember Kim knows how to dictate and dictators don’t
live in a delusion. And that is why they are dictators and not democrats. They
don’t run a country, they rule it.
